Alexandria, Va. – March 29, 2017 – To address the challenges of ensuring all students are college ready, career ready and life ready, AASA, The School Superintendents Association, has launched a national initiative designed to create successful pathways for America’s high school students.

The Redefining Ready! program introduces new research-based metrics to more appropriately assess that students are ready to pursue their lifelong goals and dreams following post-secondary education.

“This program is in response to college and career readiness scores reported by standardized test makers that fail to portray a comprehensive picture of student potential,” said Daniel A. Domenech, AASA executive director. “Like the global economy, today’s students are driven by ideas and innovations. They should not be reduced to a single test score. AASA looks forward to working with school system leaders on an endeavor that will positively affect high school students throughout the country.”

“Together we must support our high school graduates’ ability to demonstrate readiness to colleges, employers, their families and the world in which we all live,” said David Schuler, AASA immediate past president and superintendent of High School District 214 in suburban Chicago. “Our set of readiness indicators will open up the doors for more students to pursue their post-secondary goals with confidence.”

Redefining Ready! is being endorsed by educators and organizations across the country. The Board of Education of High School District 214, the second-largest high school district in Illinois, was the first to endorse the campaign.

AASA is now accepting applications to the Redefining Ready! cohort, which will support the work of this initiative. Through this cohort, AASA, in partnership with Hobsons and the ECRA Group, will support its members by creating meaningful experiences and resources surrounding the program’s mission.

School system leaders interested in becoming part of this initiative can access the application form by visiting the AASA website

Earlier this month at its National Conference on Education in New Orleans, AASA announced the Redefining Ready! National Scholarship 2017. In partnership with Hobsons, the scholarship competition allows students to tell the world why they are college, career, and life ready through a 30-second social media video. Fifteen students will win scholarships ranging in value from $1,000 to $10,000.
