As superintendent in Bismarck, N.D., for more than nine years, Paul Johnson spends a lot of time in the public eye … and also their ear. He’s a bass player in the Missouri River Boys, a bluegrass band that plays area festivals, banquets and charity events at least once a month. A band member for four years, Johnson took up the bass in college when his older brother’s band had a vacancy. He says he’s been motivated “to understand the discipline that it takes to learn an instrument, to learn it well enough to play in public, to take the risk of presenting another side of yourself in public. That’s a good lesson for us.” Johnson, an AASA member since 2001, says he intends to keep playing music “until arthritis sets in and takes its toll, or I can’t hobble onto the stage anymore.”
