Senator Toomey is pushing to include a provision in the
Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, anti-human trafficking legislation
currently being debated in the Senate, which would bolster background checks
for teachers. AASA opposes the amendment, which poses unnecessary barriers to
employment and increased burden on school employers without providing greater
protection for students. AASA has encouraged Senators to vote NO on this
provision, and suggests that you do the same.
At the same time, Chairman Alexander introduced an amendment
with a more measured approach to background checks. We have encouraged Senators
to vote YES on this amendment.
We sent a letter to the Senate, urging Senators to take these actions.
