Winston C. Brooks
The 90,000-student Albuquerque, N.M., Public Schools, the country’s 25th largest district, has a new superintendent in Winston Brooks. He spent the last 10 years as superintendent in Wichita, Kan., where he worked for more than two decades. His professional record includes time as a principal, executive director of personnel and employee relations, chief negotiator and division director of personnel services. A 2004 recipient of the Fulbright Program-Seminar for U.S. Superintendents in Germany, Brooks was honored two years earlier as Kansas Superintendent of the Year.

Lee D. Bush
In his 32nd year as a professional educator, Lee Bush has been appointed administrator of the City of Cape Coral, Fla., Charter School Authority, which oversees 1,900 students in three buildings. Concurrently, he is serving as principal of Christa McAuliffe Charter Elementary School in Cape Coral. Bush, an 11-year AASA member, previously served as superintendent of the LaFarge, Wis., school district. Bush earned his Ed.D. in educational leadership from University of Miami, Coral Gables.

Deborah S. Delisle
The Ohio State Board of Education has appointed Deborah Delisle as state superintendent of public instruction. Since 2003, she has been the superintendent of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District in Ohio. Previously she filled the district’s position of associate superintendent for educational services. Delisle also served as director of academic services in the West Geauga School District; language arts specialist in the Orange School District; and coordinator of the K-12 gifted/enrichment program in the Shaker Heights district, all in Ohio.

Sandra Smyser
After a year as interim superintendent in Steamboat Springs, Colo., Sandra Smyser has joined the 5,888-student Eagle County School District 50-J in Eagle, Colo., as superintendent. She previously served as superintendent in three California systems: Las Virgenes Unified Schools in Calabasas; Carpinteria Unified School District; and the Solvang School District. She holds a Ph.D. in special education from the University of California, Riverside.

Following a life in school administration in New Jersey, Melindo (Mel) Persi has turned his passion to speed. High speed. Persi, an AASA honorary member now living in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is pursuing a childhood fantasy: stock car racing. His father, a racing worker, allowed Persi at age 10 to warm up vehicles, but his chief thrill came recently when, as a Father’s Day gift, he drove a NASCAR vehicle on Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C., for 10 laps at 145 mph. Persi also restores old cars, currently a 1974 VW. “In racing there are no shortcuts, just like in life,” he says.
