There are several types of information we do collect. These include:

  Automatically Collected Information

If during your visit you only browse through the website, read pages or download information, we will gather and store certain technical information about your visit automatically. This information does not identify you personally. We automatically collect and store only the following information about your visit:

  • The Internet domain name (for example, "company.org" if you use a private Internet access account, or "yourorganization.edu" if you connect from a university's domain);
  • The IP address (an IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to each computer connected to the Internet) from which you access our website;
  • The type of browser (e.g. Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.);
  • The operating system (e.g., Windows, Macintosh, Unix, and etc.) used to access our site;
  • The date and time you access our site;
  • The pages (URLs) you visit;
  • Your username, if it was used to log in to the website; and
  • The address (URL) of the referral website, if you linked to the AASA website from another website.

We use this information to help us make our site more useful to visitors -- to learn about the number of visitors to our site and the types of technology our visitors use, and to tailor each visitor's preference. We do not track or record information about individuals and their visits.

  Information Collected for Tracking and Customization (Cookies)

Cookies are small files that web servers place on a user's hard drive. There are two types of cookies, session and persistent. Session cookies last only as long as your web browser is open. Once you close your browser, the cookie disappears. Persistent cookies store information on your computer for longer periods of time. AASA does not use "persistent cookies" or any other persistent tracking methods to collect personally identifiable information about visitors to our web pages. However, some AASA pages have "session cookies," to facilitate use of that particular page. These disappear when the Web user terminates a web session and closes the browser.

To protect your privacy, be sure to close your browser completely after you have finished conducting business with a website that does use cookies. If you are concerned about the potential use of the information gathered from your computer by cookies, you can set your browser to prompt you before it accepts a cookie.
