New Resource from CAP: Ensuring Digital Accessibility in K-12 Schools
November 15, 2024
The Center for American Progress (CAP) released a new column titled Ensuring Digital Accessibility in K-12 Schools in a Technology Driven Era. This article is the third in a CAP series focused on policy recommendations to enhance the use of technology in K-12 public schools.
Author, Weadé James, explains how the Department of Justice’s recent rule enhancing the regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) impacts school districts. The new rule removes technology-related accessibility barriers for the 7.5 million disabled students who attend U.S. public schools.
The author offers a multi-phase roadmap to help districts comply with the new rule and prioritize accessibility in its procurement and integration of technology. To ensure meaningful use of digital tools and equitable access for all learners, districts must apply the following considerations:
- Phase 1: Conduct a digital accessibility needs assessment and develop a strategic plan for technology integration.
- Phase 2: Complete an audit of digital tools and identify feasibility to achieve full accessibility.
- Phase 3: Revise vendor agreements, evaluate existing policies, and explore new policies and guidance to enhance digital accessibility and data privacy.
- Phase 4: Cultivate partnerships, prioritize AI accessibility, and provide training and resources for educators, students, and families.
