Senate Passes Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act (KOSPA)

August 01, 2024

Earlier this week, the Senate passed KOSPA (which incorporates both COPPA 2.0 and KOSA) by a vote of 91-3. The dissenting senators were Sens. Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and Ron Wyden.

AASA joined ten other national groups in a letter that supported COPPA 2.0 while expressing concerns about how KOSA may impact schools.

Next steps: The bill will move to the House, who is on recess until September. Our team will use the month of August to continue our round of meetings to respond to the drafts the House shares and highlight our remaining asks for their bill (a couple small changes to KOSA). We do not yet have a read on the exact timeline for a vote or what the actual bill text or substitute will be. Stay tuned to the blog!
