Alexandria, Va. – February 10, 2020Today, Daniel A. Domenech, executive director of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s budget proposal for FY 2021.

“Once again, unsurprisingly, the president has released a budget proposal that is bad for students, bad for schools, and bad for public education.

“This week, more than 2,000 of the nation’s public school superintendents are gathering in San Diego for the annual AASA National Conference on Education, an opportunity to network, learn, and grow their professional, academic, and personal skill sets so they can better serve the students, schools and systems they lead. The contrast in leadership couldn’t be more obvious: whereas our members are committed to strengthening and supporting the nation’s public schools, the nation’s leader has once again doubled down on the flawed policies and priorities of privatization.

Increased investment in education—particularly in formula programs—is a critical step to improving education for all students and bolstering student learning, school performance and college and career readiness among our high school graduates. The continued willingness of the current administration to advance a budget that chronically underinvests in our children and their education has a compounding effect, broader than just schools, and it has very real consequences.

“To quote Nelson Mandela, ‘There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children’, and by this metric, the president and his budget continue to miss the mark and leave our children behind.

“AASA welcomes the opportunity to work with Congress on a strong bipartisan appropriations package that protects and prioritizes investment in public education.”
