Alexandria, Va. – (July 17, 2020) – AASA, The School Superintendents Association, the nation’s premier organization representing public school system leadership, is awarding a $1,000 scholarship to Klamath Union High School, in Klamath Falls, Ore., on behalf of AASA President Kristi Wilson, the superintendent of Buckeye Elementary School District in Buckeye, Ariz.
AASA annually awards a scholarship on behalf of its newly installed president. An Oregon native, Wilson is a graduate of Klamath Falls Schools.
“Being able to give back is important to me. I have a long lineage of family members who have attended Klamath Schools, which is why I am proud to make this contribution,” said Wilson. “It’s important that we, as educators, continue to invest in the ‘whole child’ so more students can participate in music, the arts and athletics. Klamath Falls is a special place; I was fortunate to be part of the Klamath community.”
Klamath Falls City Schools is a high-poverty district with about 75% of the district’s 3,000 students receiving free or reduced-priced lunch. The school system is noted for its excellence in the arts, particularly music, digital media and theater, and for its high number of college partnerships and dual credit opportunities.
“Our school district is grateful to Superintendent Wilson and AASA for their kind contribution to our scholarship opportunities,” said Paul Hillyer, superintendent, KFCS. “This donation will be used to help a deserving student start on a pathway to college success and to a fulfilling life. We are extremely proud of Dr. Wilson’s accomplishments, and how she has supported the learning and development of young people through her distinguished educational career.”
Earlier this month, Wilson was sworn in as the 2020-21 president of AASA in conjunction with the organization’s (virtual) Legislative Advocacy Conference. (Click here to view the ceremony.)
