Alexandria, Va. – July 19, 2020 – Today, Daniel A. Domenech, executive director of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, issued the following statement on the passing of U.S. Rep. John Lewis.
“On behalf of every single advocate for public education across the country, AASA mourns the loss of John Lewis, a champion for children, a champion for Americans, a true patriot and a giant among us all.
“An inspiration for equity and justice, Congressman Lewis taught us the meaning of courage. ‘If you believe in something, you have to go for it,’ he once said. I couldn’t agree more.
“As we work toward undoing the wrongs caused by racism in our country so that every child in America can become a successful contributor to our society, we should pause to reflect upon the myriad of paths created by John Lewis. We should reflect on the lessons learned from the hardships he endured throughout his life.
“The sacrifices and contributions John Lewis brought to us should never be forgotten. An American hero, his legacy will be felt worldwide.”
