New York Superintendent Shari Camhi to be Named AASA President-elect

Alexandria, Va. – March 16, 2021 – Shari L. Camhi, superintendent of the Baldwin Union Free School District in Baldwin, N.Y., has been elected as the 2021-22 president-elect of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, the nation’s premier organization representing the more than 13,000 public school superintendents.
Under her leadership, the graduation rate at Baldwin Schools has climbed to 98%, ranking the high school among U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best High Schools for the first time. In addition, her district has achieved the “New York State Recognition School” distinction by the New York State Education Department for the past two years.
“AASA is very proud of Shari Camhi and the work she has done to maintain the safety and welfare of the staff and students during this pandemic. It is with pleasure that I congratulate her as our next president-elect,” said Daniel A. At a time when the nation is desperately in need of innovative and bold leadership in our schools, Shari Camhi will step forward to meet the challenge.”
“As our public school system leaders continue to navigate through the challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and work toward finding new beginnings for their young learners, it is an honor to welcome Shari Camhi to this new role,” said Kristi Wilson, 2020-21 president of AASA and superintendent of the Buckeye Elementary School District in Buckeye, Ariz. “Superintendent Camhi defines what it means to be a futuristic leader—someone who is working diligently to prepare her students for the years that lie ahead of them while maximizing the potential of their learning capabilities.”
Selected as a prestigious “Leader to Learn From” by Education Week, Camhi is a recipient of the ISTE Sylvia Charp Award for district innovation in technology. She has also been recognized as a “New Superintendent to Watch” by the National School Public Relations Association, selected among only 25 nationwide for her efforts in technology and communication.
“I cannot think of a more honorable legacy than to represent superintendents around the country as the next president-elect of AASA,” said Camhi. “I have tremendous admiration and respect for the work, character and resilience of education leaders. One of my top priorities in this new role will be to narrow the digital divide that exists in our country in order to provide equitable access to each and every student.”
Camhi earned her doctorate from Teacher’s College at Columbia University and two master’s degrees—one from Long Island University and another from Adelphi University. Currently a member of the AASA Governing Board, she is also a graduate of the AASA National Superintendent Certification® program.
Camhi and other newly elected AASA governance members will begin their terms on July 1. Paul Imhoff, superintendent of Upper Arlington Schools in Upper Arlington, Ohio, and Camhi will be sworn in as president and president-elect, respectively, in July at a summer meeting of the AASA Governing Board.
