Leaders of Social, Emotional Learning Convene in Savannah-Chatham Schools for AASA’s SEL Cohort Meeting

Consortium to Serve as National Leader in Meeting the Needs of the 'Whole Child'

Alexandria, Va. – May 1, 2023 – AASA, The School Superintendent Association, in partnership with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) will gather superintendents and other K-12 administrators who champion social and emotional learning in Savannah, Ga., May 1-3, as part of AASA’s SEL Cohort.

During the three-day event, district leaders will focus on SCCPSS’s comprehensive work on supporting its students and families with extensive wraparound services. A highlight of the visit will be hearing from “The Front Porch,” a community agency that supports teens and families. Participants will engage in meaningful dialogue with their peers about how to systemically integrate social, emotional and academic skills on behalf of the students they serve.

“One of our strategic goals is to ensure that student academic programming for our learning community includes a focus on enhancing students' social and emotional learning and life-skill development skills,” said Ann Levett, superintendent, SCCPSS. “The work we are doing exemplifies capturing the expertise of our students and the fundamental knowledge they bring to the table that is often ignored in the traditional approach to educating them. We are honored to host the AASA SEL Spring Cohort meeting.”

Schuler, executive director, AASA. “Given its strength in this critical issue, we are pleased that Savannah-Chatham Schools is serving as host site for this important meeting—a gathering that will draw dozens of district leaders from across the country who champion SEL and know that educating the ‘whole child’ is necessary for communities to move forward.”

• What observations are you making from this site visit?
• What problem or opportunity is your district trying to address?
• What action(s) can you take away from this visit that can be implemented in your district?
• How are you embedding SEL into the thread of your community?
