Nation’s Top Superintendents Gather in Washington for AASA 2023 Superintendent of the Year Forum

Alexandria, Va. – Nov. 13, 2023 – AASA, The School Superintendents Association, the nation’s premier voice for school system leaders, is pleased to host the 2023 Superintendent of the Year Forum in Washington, D.C., Nov. 14-15, honoring excellence in school district leadership and facilitating discussions covering the most critical issues in public education.

Themed Future Driven Education, the forum will be held at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel spotlighting the 2023 State Superintendents of the Year, including Kevin McGowan, the 2023 National Superintendent of the Year® and superintendent of New York’s Brighton Central Schools.

During the two-day gathering, Schuler will lead an innovative leadership question-and-answer session featuring 2023 National Superintendent of the Year® finalists PJ Caposey, Meridian Community Unit (Ill.) School District 223 and Matthew Hillmann, Northfield Public Schools ISD 659.

Other key discussions will focus on:

  • Promoting safe and supportive schools
  • Generative AI in education
  • Strategic educator staffing
  • Trends in state education finance

In addition, McGowan will lead a presentation about how his school district is addressing the individual needs of students and overcoming the challenges of closing achievement gaps.

The event is co-sponsored by AASA, Corebridge, formerly known as AIG Life & Retirement, and First Student, INC.     

Now in its 36th year, the National Superintendent of the Year® program celebrates the contributions and leadership of public school superintendents. The criterion for the annual award includes leadership in learning, communication, professionalism and community involvement. The four finalists for the 2024 National Superintendent of the Year® will be announced in December.
