AASA Welcomes Esteemed Veteran Superintendents to Leadership Network
February 22, 2024
ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 22, 2024 - AASA, The Superintendents Association, is delighted to announce the addition of two distinguished school systems leaders and dedicated public education advocates, Kristine A. Gilmore, Ed.D., and John Malloy, Ed.D., to the AASA team.
Gilmore will join AASA on March 1, as associate executive director, Leadership Network – the professional learning arm of the association, and the largest assembly of superintendents in America. Gilmore succeeds Mort Sherman, Ed.D., who will be retiring at the end of June.
“AASA’s Leadership Network has grown tremendously under the exemplary stewardship of Dr. Sherman,” said David R. Schuler, Ph.D., executive director, AASA. “His vision and leadership grew the program from less than five offerings when he started, to more than fifty offerings today. That growth is a testament to his leadership, and I’m forever grateful for his tireless dedication to this work.”
Being a superintendent is one of the most important jobs in our country and, undoubtedly - one of the hardest! When I was a superintendent, I turned to AASA as a great source of professional development, support and vision. I look forward to supporting, growing and inspiring our great leaders on behalf of our public school children.
Gilmore brings to the role more than two decades of experience in public education leadership, with 19 of those serving as a superintendent for D.C. Everest District, Wis. Under her leadership the DCE District was recognized as a national leader in education and innovation. Most recently, Gilmore served as a senior director at the Greenheck Group where she led the organization’s recruiting, compensation, benefits, talent development and corporate communications teams made up of 4,400 employees across 8 states.
“I am beyond excited to join the team and mission of AASA,” Gilmore said. “Being a superintendent is one of the most important jobs in our country and, undoubtedly - one of the hardest! When I was a superintendent, I turned to AASA as a great source of professional development, support and vision. I look forward to supporting, growing, and inspiring our great leaders on behalf of our public school children.”
Also joining the Leadership Network’s team is John Malloy, who will join AASA staff as assistant executive director after serving as superintendent of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, Danville, Calif. Malloy is the former superintendent of the Toronto District School Board in Canada, the 8th largest school district in North America.
“It is a great privilege to serve AASA, and superintendents and educational leaders nationwide,” said Malloy. “Public education stands as a fundamental pillar of our nation, where leadership plays a pivotal role. I look forward to supporting amazing leaders, dedicated to profoundly influencing our students' futures.”
Gilmore and Malloy will work with AASA senior assistant executive director Valerie Truesdale and assistant executive director Ann Levett to focus on driving superintendent success, innovation and growth while shaping the future of public education. Their history with, and commitment to, AASA’s growth and success runs deep: Gilmore formerly served on the AASA governing board, has served as a mentor for Leadership Network programs and has been very active in our AASA women’s initiatives.
Malloy currently serves on AASA’s governing board, AASA’s Superintendent of the Year Selection Committee and has served as a mentor and a cohort leader for Leadership Network programs. His district was part of the inaugural AASA Learning 2025 Network and was named a national Lighthouse Demonstration System in 2022 in the area of social, emotional, cognitive growth.
Gilmore was recognized as the Wisconsin State Superintendent of the Year and Malloy received recognition as the Canadian Superintendent of the Year when he was in Ontario.
“We’ve hit the school systems leadership jackpot with these two hires,” said Schuler. “Dr. Gilmore has a track record as a leader that is second to none and I cannot wait to see how she will continue to grow and refine our network programming in the years ahead, while Dr. Malloy is simply one of the most brilliant and highly respected superintendents in North America and we are thrilled to have him joining our AASA team,” Schuler said.
