Oregon Superintendent Gustavo Balderas Named AASA President

Alexandria, Va. – (July 10, 2024) – Gustavo Balderas, superintendent of the Beaverton School District, in Beaverton, Ore., was sworn in today as the 2024-25 president of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, the nation’s premier organization representing more than 13,000 school system leaders nationwide.

Balderas has served as superintendent in Beaverton since 2022, after serving as school district leader in Edmonds, Wash., Eugene Ore., and two California districts. He first joined AASA in 2011.

 

“I am very fortunate for having great teachers and mentors while growing up in a small town in eastern Oregon. Fast forward to today and I feel humbled and honored to become the president of AASA, whose members are creating and maintaining state-of-the-art learning platforms for their students,” said Balderas. “Public education needs strong leadership more now than ever before. I am looking forward to working hard to move AASA’s mission forward during the coming year so every student in America can lead a successful life after high school.”

 

 

Balderas is a current member of the AASA executive committee and is the president of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents. He was recently named one of 100 education influencers by District Administration in 2024. He was also named National Association for Bilingual Education National Superintendent of the Year in 2023 and AASA National Superintendent of the Year® and Oregon Superintendent of the Year in 2020.

“Superintendent Balderas represents the model of what a successful leader in public education or any profession should be and has demonstrated integrity wherever he has been throughout his career,” said David R. Schuler, executive director, AASA. “I look forward to working side-by-side with Gustavo to orchestrate effective policies and innovative and future-driven programs in order for every school district, large and small, to succeed.”

Balderas’ post-secondary degrees include Ed.D., University of Oregon, Eugene, Ore.; M.S., Portland State University, Portland, Ore.; B.A., Western Oregon University, Monmouth, Ore.

David Law, superintendent of the Minnetonka Public School District, in Minnetonka, Minn., was also sworn in today as the 2024-25 president-elect of AASA. The installation ceremony was held in conjunction with AASA’s Legislative Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.
