2024 Summer Journal of Scholarship and Practice
In the Summer 2024 issue of the AASA Journal of Scholarship and Practice, Editor Ken Mitchell presents articles that explore proactive leadership and preparedness in education. Inspired by a discussion with superintendents, Mitchell emphasizes the need for leaders to anticipate and mitigate unexpected challenges.
The first article, “Lip Service to Action Planning: Why Education Leaders Should Conduct Equity Audits,” by Michael Farrow, JoAnn Manning, and James Coaxum, discusses how equity audits can support education leadership programs. The authors highlight that these audits serve as action research, enabling leaders to develop and implement measurable plans to address school issues.
Robin Clausen's “Under the Hood: Montana Early Warning System” shares a case study on Montana's efforts to predict and prevent student dropouts through an Early Warning System (EWS). Clausen details the program's successes and areas needing improvement.
Lastly, Art Stellar reviews Rajiv Shah’s book, Big Bets: How Large-Scale Change Really Happens. Shah, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, advocates for shifting focus from small-scale improvements to large-scale innovations for transformational benefits.
Mitchell concludes, “This issue’s researchers’ ideas reflect a proactive and predictive approach that imagines the worst while finding potential remedies to benefit one and all. We hope you take something from their work.”

Thanks and Appreciation
The AASA Journal of Scholarship and Practice would like to thank AASA, The School Superintendents Association, and in particular AASA’s Leadership Network, for its ongoing sponsorship of the Journal. We also offer special thanks to Kenneth Mitchell, Manhattanville University, for his efforts in selecting the articles that comprise this professional education journal and lending sound editorial comments to each volume. The unique relationship between research and practice is appreciated, recognizing the mutual benefit to those educators who conduct the research and seek out evidence-based practice and those educators whose responsibility it is to carry out the mission of school districts in the education of children. Without the support of AASA and Kenneth Mitchell, the AASA Journal of Scholarship and Practice would not be possible.
