A Time to Refresh

The start of each new school year in August or September marks a time of renewal, when educators apply restored vigor and new ideas to their work in K-12 education. Along the same lines, the fall season gives us a chance to introduce a few new tricks to School Administrator.

First, beginning in September, we will launch a pair of monthly columns. The first, titled Social Media, will explore the practical considerations involving the superintendent’s personal use of Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs, et al., and the oversight of student and staff use of personal technology. It’s fertile ground for exploring some of the wildly disruptive dynamics playing out in schools right now.

The second addition is a column called Inside AASA, where we will introduce readers to AASA staff members alongside the initiatives they manage in service to members.

Meanwhile, I want to recognize two new panelists on our monthly Ethical Educator column. With this issue, we welcome Sarah Jerome, who served as AASA president in 2007-08, and Maggie Lopez, who spent 37 years serving schools in Colorado, the last three as superintendent in Pueblo. They are filling the analyst berths held capably during the past year or longer by Kelly Henson and Sarah Mackenzie, whom we thank for their thoughtful service.

We also are expecting to add some short videos related to magazine content to the mix. More about that is forthcoming.
