Editor's Note
Unannounced But Welcome Fare

The major content appearing in this issue carries a distinction of sorts. The six major articles about facets of school system governance all came to us originally as unsolicited manuscripts. That means they showed up unannounced as submissions for our consideration and were evaluated favorably by the three members of School Administrator’s editorial team.

More commonly, the published lineup of articles and columns reflects a mix of invited articles and those accepted through the manuscript review process (which you can learn about at www.aasa.org/publications/school-administrator/author-guidelines).

The contributors to this issue include three current or former superintendents writing about advancing their work with school boards and a teachers union. Other pieces reviewed favorably for publication address the need for “psychological safety” among school board members today and one veteran school leader’s efforts to protect his reputation and professional integrity.

Lastly, you’ll find a full-length article titled “Boardroom Mistakes Superintendents Make” by Nick Caruso, one of our most faithful contributors to School Administrator over the past decade, whose columns typically run two or three times a year in our Board-Savvy Superintendent section.

We appreciate that he and all of this month’s authors thought to invest their time in writing (and rewriting) for us and for you.
