Four transformative outcomes from implementing Link Crew, a student leadership mentor program, in Warrensburg-Latham High School in Warrensburg, Ill.

At Warrensburg-Latham High School (WLHS), we believe that a strong foundation is the key to success for all students. That’s why our Link Crew program is more than just a freshman orientation; it’s a comprehensive transition program designed to foster leadership among upperclassmen, improve attendance rates for freshmen, and create a welcoming environment where all students feel they belong.
Link Crew pairs upperclassmen mentors with incoming freshmen to ease their transition into high school, providing guidance, support and a friendly face in the hallways. These upperclassmen leaders undergo training to develop leadership, communication, and mentorship skills, which they then use to build relationships with their assigned freshmen.
Developing Leaders & Empowering a Generation
For upperclassmen, being part of Link Crew is more than a title—it’s a responsibility. They lead small groups during freshman orientation, organize follow-up activities throughout the year, and serve as role models. These experiences help student leaders develop confidence, empathy, and problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Senior Leader Bella Griffiths shared that, “Being a part of Link Crew and taking on this big leadership role has taught me to become approachable and supportive to the students.” She was particularly validated when one of her freshmen gave her name when she was asked to name their favorite role model.
Boosting Freshman Attendance & Engagement
Transitioning to high school can be overwhelming, and students who struggle to find a sense of belonging are more likely to disengage. At WLHS, Link Crew has made a measurable difference in our freshman attendance rates.
By creating personal connections between freshmen and their upperclassmen mentors, the program ensures that new students feel supported from day one. Freshmen know they have someone looking out for them, and this has significantly increased their willingness to attend school and actively participate in their education.
Fostering Belonging & Inclusion
High school can sometimes feel intimidating, especially for new students. Link Crew breaks down barriers by intentionally creating an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome. Senior Leader Mikee Montemar said, “The most rewarding part of being a Link Crew Leader for me is getting to share the experience of the activities with the freshmen. Seeing them laugh and have fun for even a few minutes, (especially the quiet kids), with other people their age is super fulfilling because it's a good reminder that they have a support system in place here at school. It's also kind of healing as well, as I've wished so many times that I had something like that during my freshman year (especially since 2021 was the year we were coming back from Covid).”
By fostering relationships between grade levels, the program ensures that students feel seen, valued and connected to the WLHS community. This sense of belonging translates into higher engagement and a desire to be part of the school’s culture.
Transforming School Culture
Link Crew is not just a program; it’s a movement that’s transforming WLHS. It reinforces the values of leadership, accountability, and community, aligning perfectly with our school’s theme: Taking Care of Business & Each Other. By investing in the next generation of students, we are creating a legacy of success and a school culture where every student feels empowered to thrive.
At Warrensburg-Latham High School, Link Crew is proof that when students lead the way, incredible things happen. Our freshmen are engaged and eager to attend school, our upperclassmen are stepping up as leaders, and our entire school community is stronger because of it.
Perspective from Superintendent, Cheryl Warner
As a district superintendent, I believe Link Crew is a program that is worth every minute and dollar invested in the program. I have been able to experience Link Crew as a building principal as well as a mother of a student in the program. It has had a direct impact on attendance, academic achievement, social emotional well being, successful transition to high school and overall climate and culture of the district. As a mother, I observed my freshman daughter blossom in her leadership to the point in which she became a mentor as a junior. Link Crew facilitates distinct connections that create leadership opportunities and students that care and support others.
