I recently had the privilege of attending the AASA Mental Health & Social Emotional Learning Summit in San Ramon, an experience that left me both energized and introspective. The event was a vibrant hub of ideas and insights, featuring a lineup of thought-provoking speakers and opportunities for practical application through district sharing and classroom observations.

The power of collective wisdom and support cannot be overstated, and it is only together that we can effectively address the complex needs of our school communities.
Finding Strength in Community

One of the most impactful moments came during a session with Dr. Taryn Stejskal. Dr. Stejskal illuminated the often-overlooked aspect of leadership challenges—namely, that the true difficulty lies not in the challenges themselves, but in the isolation we experience as we navigate these hurdles. This perspective resonated deeply with me. In the realm of supporting the SEL and mental health needs of our students and staff, the path can feel particularly solitary. As an individual school leader or a team within our schools, confronting these needs can seem daunting and isolating.

Dr. Stejskal's insights shed light on a critical area of our work in education: the importance of community and shared experience. The isolation can indeed be overwhelming, but it is through collective effort and shared vulnerability that we can find strength and make meaningful progress.

The summit offered an enriching platform to connect with fellow educators and leaders nationwide, fostering an open sharing of ideas and challenges. These interactions reminded us that we are not alone in this journey. The power of collective wisdom and support cannot be overstated, and it is only together that we can effectively address the complex needs of our school communities.

The Path Forward

As we move forward, I am inspired to strengthen the bonds within our district and beyond, ensuring that no one has to face these challenges in isolation. The lessons learned, and connections made at the summit will be instrumental in guiding our strategies to support the mental health and emotional well-being of our students and staff.

The SEL and Mental Health Summit was not just an event but a steppingstone toward a more connected and supportive educational landscape. I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated and look forward to the positive changes we will bring to our community as a result.

The AASA Mental Health & Social Emotional Learning Summit took place at San Ramon Valley Unified School District in California from April 17-19, 2024.

The event was hosted by AASA's Mental Health Cohort and Social Emotional Learning Cohort. It was an opportunity for district leaders across the country to come together and explore the latest data, research and trends around SEL and the mental health needs of students and school communities at-large.
