State of the Superintendency
Age at First Superintendency

While few superintendents are appointed to their first superintendency prior to age 30, the latest AASA survey on the profession shows most appointments occur in their early to mid-40s.

Noteworthy, according to the data, is the finding that females are appointed to their first superintendency at a later age than their male counterparts. This finding among 830 survey respondents represents yet another indicator that the career path to the superintendency appears to differ by gender.

While disaggregation by gender on this question is not available from earlier AASA studies, overall the first appointment to the superintendency appears to be occurring earlier, with mean age moving from the late 40s in the 2000 study.
