Crafting Adaptive Policies Alongside AI’s Rapid Pace

As artificial intelligence reshapes education, the South Glens Falls Central School District in upstate New York, like many others, has faced a daunting task: how to create a board of education policy around AI use in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Our work began, unsurprisingly, with ChatGPT’s debut in November 2022, sparking discussions on embracing technology mindfully while addressing concerns around data privacy, academic integrity and student safety.

The initial debates centered on whether to restrict access or proactively engage with AI. We opted for a two-pronged approach by allowing exploration while implementing structured learning opportunities. As a one-to-one device district, we leveraged our years-long experience in maintaining student safety and privacy on personal devices without squelching the urge to dive into this exciting technology shift.
