My View

Throughout my journey in education, I’ve learned that belonging is essential to success. To foster belonging, people need equitable access to the learning communities we create.

Some of my most valuable lessons have come from listening to those I serve, allowing me to see the world from different perspectives. One of the most impactful perspectives has come from my son, Micah, a 9th grader.

Being Micah’s father is a profound joy, and it has reshaped my understanding of leadership and education in countless ways. His experiences have given me deep insights into the power of inclusion, and his voice always is part of my inner dialogue.

Micah was born with a rare genetic mutation affecting his brain development. He is legally blind, nonverbal, uses a wheelchair, receives nutrition through a feeding tube and experiences daily seizures. These challenges often lead others to focus on what Micah cannot do rather than celebrating what he can. Micah is an incredible human being: a friend, a listener, an athlete who has completed 41 marathons in his wheelchair and an advocate for inclusion. He loves being part of his community and brings joy wherever he goes.
