FOCUS: COMMUNITY RELATIONS

When we prioritize schools as safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for all students, school districts have an obligation to dismantle symbols of systematic oppression. As leaders, we must lead by example and acknowledge those areas that contribute to inequities.

In the Corvallis, Ore., School District, the decision by our school board to rename three schools highlighted the immediate and long-term impact of connecting students to local citizens who empower and inspire. (The previous names of the buildings were Hoover Elementary, Jefferson Elementary and Wilson Elementary.)
