The purpose of this article is to illustrate an innovative online doctoral course on the pre-service
exploration of the superintendency in order to advocate for effective teaching practices in response to
calls from the field. To this end, a review of literature was utilized in order to frame and illustrate the
course, bringing forth key concepts, ideas, and needs in the areas of superintendent preparation,
pedagogy, and the superintendency. The value of this article is two-fold: 1) to illustrate innovative
online teaching practices in the preparation of school leaders, and 2) highlight through a focused review
of the literature, the need for academic programs to respond to national and local trends to enhance
student preparation.
