K-8 Framework Readiness Indicators

This fact sheet highlights key factors of AASA’s K-8 Framework Readiness Indicators.

Middle School Readiness Indicators for Grads K-5

Students should be supported through:

  • 60-minutes of uninterrupted play per day while in kindergarten
  • Participation in Visual and/or Performing Arts weekly during the school day
  • Age-appropriate SEL instruction and adult support.

In addition, students should be able to:

  • Read on grade level by the end of 3rd grade on state/district readiness measures

AND meet 3 of the following indicators:

  • 90% attendance rate.
  • Annual Community Service/Service Learning participation
  • Participation in at least one extracurricular activity (club/sport) in 5th grade
  • Report a positive relationship with at least one staff member each year.
  • Meet grade-level SEL competency targets.
High School Readiness Indicators for Grades 6-8

Students should be supported through:

  • Participation in Visual and/or Performing Arts during the school day (weekly)
  • Participation in experiences or exploration in career field(s) of interest by the end of 8th grade
  • Participation in experiences or exploration of post-secondary training options/opportunities by the end of 8th grade
  • Age-appropriate SEL instruction and adult support.

In addition, students should be able to:

  • Earn in 8th grade at least a “C” in English and Math

AND meet 3 of the following indicators:

  • 90% attendance rate.
  • Annual Community Service/Service Learning participation
  • Participation in at least one extracurricular activity (club/sport) annually
  • Report a positive relationship with at least one staff member each year.
  • Meet grade-level SEL competency targets.
