State of the Superintendency
AASA’s “The American Superintendent: 2020 Decennial Study” asked participants nationwide to identify all the positions in which they had at least one year of full-time experience before becoming a superintendent.
Nearly 96
percent of the 1,218 participants had experience as a classroom teacher and more than four-fifths had served as a principal. Overall, the question received 4,387 re-sponses by allowing multiple responses.
Notably, the percentage who had
served as an assistant principal matched the finding from the decennial survey in 2010 at 53 percent.
