A man in a hockey uniform holding his stick and helmet while on the iceFifteen years ago, when David Miyashiro accepted a new job 90 minutes away, he and some buddies created a reason to gather regularly — a recreational ice hockey team called Shot in the Beer. The championship-winning team continues today with five of the original 13 members teaming for Friday night games and socials. Team captain Miyashiro, superintendent of Cajon Valley Union School District in El Cajon, Calif., and AASA member since 2021, had no experience with ice hockey at the outset. He says he taught himself to skate by watching YouTube. A forward, he’s much better but still learning — a process that comes with important reminders. “I have to continue to work on my game,” he says. “From a growth-mindset perspective, being in a beginner role has helped me look at a lot of things differently, especially just not giving up.”
