Ethical Educator
Scenario: At a large public high school in Florida, the boys’ basketball team conducts fundraising during the early fall to raise money for travel to an out-of-state tournament during the holiday week at year’s end. Tryouts had yet to begin, but a couple of students thought their chances of making the team might be enhanced by seeking donations. The parent of one asks the superintendent if it is ethical to have students raise funds for a team that they hope to be on but have not yet been accepted to? Does their fundraising success play a role in shaping the team roster? Does it raise the hopes of students on the margins of making the team?
