STATE OF THE SUPERINTENDENCY

State of the superintendency bar graph showing how job searches were conducted

Searches resulting in a superintendent’s appointment come through several different routes, including a national search consultant, a state-level search consultant, the school board itself or even without a formal search.

In a 2022 survey of 467 superintendents in New York state, 19 percent landed in their roles following a search by a national or state consultant with another 49 percent receiving appointments following intermediate agency-led searches. Among Black superintendents, 60 percent reported coming through national and state consultants, and of Hispanic/Latino superintendents, 23 percent said their searches were run by the local school board.

Robert Lowry, deputy director of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, which conducted the survey, had this caution: “I imagine each state has idiosyncrasies that diminish the value of its experiences as lessons for people in other states.”
