Tenure in the Role

STATE OF THE SUPERINTENDENCY

The number of superintendents with five years or less of experience in the role has expanded markedly over the past two decades, according to AASA’s own surveys.

When asked about the time spent in their present superintendency, those with more than 10 years in the same post actually increased by two percentage points between 2013 and 2023.

Nearly 64 percent of superintendents have been in their current position fewer than six years, according to the most recent data.
