Whereabouts in Five Years
June 01, 2016
State of the Superintendency

About one-third of superintendents plan to be retired five years from now, and that figure varies little by school districts’ enrollment size.
Superintendents overseeing districts with 2,500 to 9,999 students were the most inclined to
remain in the same district, with almost 42 percent expressing that desire. A nationwide sample of 851 superintendents addressed this question: What do you hope to be doing five years from now?
The outflow of leadership experience is striking,
contributing to major implications for the preparation pipeline.
