Immigration

Guidance and resources for school district leaders navigating changes to immigration policies.

  Background

The Trump Administration has signaled interest in making significant updates to U.S. immigration policy and enforcement that will affect public schools. AASA will keep this page updated with guidance and resources for school district leaders navigating these policy changes to support their students, staff and schools.

  AASA's Position & Priorities

AASA is committed to advocating for the following:

  • AASA supports a permanent resolution to address the needs of eligible/appropriate students and young adults brought to this country as minors who are currently eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
  • AASA supports children’s access to public education regardless of documentation status and believes all children are entitled to a free and appropriate public education.
    • District leaders have a responsibility to ensure learning environments are safe, welcoming places for all students and not potential sites of immigration enforcement.
    • Federal policy must ensure all students are fully capable of taking advantage of school offerings and the federal programs they qualify for without fear of retribution from immigration enforcement.
